International cooperation for the preservation of cultural heritage

Mag. Stefan Sagl Abteilung für Kommunikation, Marketing und PR
Donau-Universität Krems

The Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta Institute is one of the most significant art schools in Southeast Asia and sets with its focus on the fine and performing arts, film and photography important international standards. A new course of study focusing on the restoration of paintings on paper and canvas will start at the Institute in autumn 2018, and is supported by the European Research Centre for Book and Paper Conservation-Restoration and Danube University Krems’ Center for Cultural Property Protection.

In Indonesia the restorers are especially confronted with challenges concerning specific climatic conditions. Therefor special know-how and expertise is needed to ensure the protection of important cultural assets and to guarantee their preservation for many up-coming generations. To impart this special knowledge a new course of study is beginning at the Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta Institute in autumn 2018. At the same time, a professorship with focus on the restoration of paintings on paper and canvas will be established, not only to ensure the quality of teaching, but also to carry out relevant research in this field.

Patricia Engel from the European Research Centre for Book and Paper Conservation-Restoration and Danube University Krems’ Center for the Protection of Cultural Property will support the responsible persons directly on-site during the studies establishment and the research professorship. This cooperation marks another milestone in the partnership between Indonesia and Danube University Krems, which has already resulted in numerous successful projects in the years before. Especially during the preservation and research of Affandi's (1907-1990) oeuvre, one of Indonesia's most important 20th century artists, several research initiatives were realized in association with the Vienna University of Technology and the Affandi Museum in Yogyakarta. “The knowledge generated from these projects and our research results from Austria merge into the best possible support we can provide our Indonesian colleagues for setting up this new study program," says Patricia Engel from Danube University Krems.

International knowledge transfer
However, cooperation is not a one-way street. Consequently a new project under the lead of Patrica Engel investigates different ways of controlling microorganisms and insects in context of cultural property protection in Indonesia and their sustainable transferability to Europe. In the process old, traditional Indonesian methods are analyzed and tested for their applicability to the present. While some approaches work under the difficult climatic conditions in Indonesia outstanding results might also be achieved in the European context after all.
