Large-scale agriculture - for profit and society?

IAMO Forum 2018 brings international experts to Halle (Saale)

The IAMO Forum 2018 entitled “Large-scale agriculture – for profit and society?” presents insights into the drivers, perspectives and challenges of large-scale farming and the increasing role of stakeholder interests. The conference provides latest research results and platforms for discussion and exchange between research and agricultural practice. Numerous nationally and internationally recognized speakers from academia, agribusiness and international institutions contribute to the conference in Halle (Saale), Germany, from 27 to 29 June 2018.

Agricultural production in transition and, increasingly, in developed and emerging economies is moving to larger farms. Highly integrated industrial-scale enterprises often operating on hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland set new standards for agricultural business and increasingly attract growing interest from non-agricultural investors. The IAMO Forum 2018 provides a platform for research that investigates the economic, managerial and social aspects of large-scale agriculture as well as institutional frameworks that enable the persistence of large agricultural enterprises. The conference’s geographical focus is on the transition countries of Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet Union, and East Asia as well as developed and emerging market economies in Europe, America and Australia.

The three days conference program includes three plenary sessions, various parallel sessions and moderated podium discussions. On the third conference day, 29 June 2018, international agribusiness representatives share their experiences with the audience and debate with stakeholders from science, policy and civil society. Nationally and internationally recognized keynote speakers and discussants have been engaged, e.g., Carl-Albrecht Bartmer, DLG e.V., Germany, Silvia Bender, Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e.V. (BUND), Germany, Ruud Huirne, Rabobank, The Netherlands, Mila Kletsky, Picking Alpha, Belgium, Alex Lissitsa, IMC SA, Ukraine, Aurélio Pavinato, SLC Agrícola SA, Brazil, Philipp Schreck, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, Eugenia Serova, FAO Liaison Office, Russian Federation, Richard J. Sexton, University of California, USA, Oane Visser, Institute of Social Studies, The Netherlands, Anna Catharina Voges, Saat-Gut Plaußig Voges KG, Germany, or Taras Vysotskyi, UCAB, Ukraine. The complete conference agenda is available online: www.iamo.de/forum/2018/program.

Conference language will be English. Simultaneous interpretation for the third conference day on Friday, 29 June 2018, will be provided (English – German).

The IAMO Forum 2018 is jointly organized by the Department of Structural Development of Farms and Rural Areas of IAMO, DLG e.V. and the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB). The conference is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal German State Saxony-Anhalt, the Rentenbank and the Leibniz ScienceCampus "Eastern Europe – Global Area" (EEGA).

    About IAMO

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyze strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
