On Saturday, 29 September 2018, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is opening its door to its Test Site Technical Safety (TTS) in Horstwalde (near Baruth/Mark). From 11 am to 6 pm, visitors will be able to take a closer look at the diverse work that takes place there. "Our work focuses on one goal – improving the safety for people and the environment," explained Prof. Dr. Ulrich Panne, president of BAM. "This includes the safe handling of explosive substances and containment of dangerous goods, but also the non-destructive testing of bridges."

From 11 am to 6 pm, visitors will be able to take a closer look at the diverse work that takes place there. Guests, big and small, will be amazed by the performances, which will be loud and hot. Among other things, our experts will perform live demonstrations, such as:
• Explosion of ATMs
Why do we do this? In order find out whether procedures designed to protect against gas attacks on ATMs are adequate.
• Jet fire testing (horizontal flames) and large-scale fires
• Safe handling of fireworks and explosive substances
But visitors will also be able to experience quiet experiments:
• Insight into concrete: At this station, visitors will see how bridges and other structures are tested non-destructively; and little guests can participate in a treasure hunt.
• Drones in science: Flying support can be used, for example, to analyse the composition and spread of gas clouds that can form after an accident.
BAM experts will also take the stage to introduce themselves and their work, and we will provide information about career opportunities at BAM at the information desk. Catering will also be provided.
Our small (and bigger) guests can have their pictures taken sitting in our historic fire engine, spin our Wheel of Fortune or play with our selection of games.
There will be free shuttle busses that run every 15 minutes to take visitors to the various stations. Guests can also walk or cycle on the premises, and car parking is available.

Background on BAM in Horstwalde
As a higher federal authority of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), BAM provides testing, research and consulting services aimed at protecting people, the environment and property. The headquarters of BAM are in Berlin. Its testing site in Horstwalde (Brandenburg) has been in operation since the beginning of the 1990s.
If laboratory tests or simulations are not sufficient in detecting risks from dangerous substances, large-scale tests are carried out at TTS in 1:1 scale. This is necessary, for example in the area of hazardous materials or explosives testing and certification, which are part of BAM’s statutory duties.
