SNSF image competition 2019: Participate and share unexpected insights into science

Medien - Abteilung Kommunikation
Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF

Following the success of the first two editions, the Swiss National Science Foundation has decided to stage its competition for images and short videos from the world of science for a third time. The best entries will be showcased in various exhibitions and via social media.

The over 800 entries in 2017 and 2018, and the enthusiasm generated among the public and media, clearly show that people like to look at and share scientific images. The SNSF Scientific Image Competition gives the public an unconventional view of research, approaching it from a completely different angle. "Presenting science in pictures offers a direct and often less complicated insight into how it works," says Daniel Saraga, project leader of the competition at the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). "Here it isn't primarily about explaining and understanding, but rather about amazement and the stories behind the pictures."

For this reason, the SNSF has decided to hold the competition for a third time in 2019. It invites all researchers to document the often unusual environment they work in, as well as any special tools and instruments, and to capture unexpected occurrences on film or make a photo of the research team at work. In so doing, they will be making their research visible to a wider audience.

An international jury composed of experts in photography, research and the media will select the winners, who will receive CHF 1000 in prize money per category for first place. In addition, the jury will award distinctions worth CHF 250 each.

Also at Nuit des images in Lausanne

The winning images and videos will then be prominently displayed at the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography. Furthermore, some works will be exhibited for the first time at the Nuit des images at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne. In previous years, the images had also been shown at the Zurich Film Festival as well as in Paris, San Francisco and Martigny.

All images and videos are accessible to the public and the media via an online database and can be used for non-commercial purposes free of charge.

Scientists working at higher education institutions or research institutions in Switzerland are eligible to participate. The submitted image or video must have been produced after 1 February 2018. Works by professional photographers are not accepted.
The deadline for entering works in the competition is 31 January 2019.

Participants can submit entries for the following four categories:
    • Object of study
    • Locations and instruments of research
    • Men and women of science
    • Short videos (max. 15 seconds)

    Hilfe
