Gabriel Felbermayr will take office tomorrow as President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He succeeds Dennis Snower, who led the Kiel Institute for 14 years and has reached the compulsory retirement age. Felbermayr will serve as President for an initial term of five years. A globally renowned expert in international trade, he previously headed the ifo Center for International Economics at the ifo Institute in Munich.
Felbermayr expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust placed in him by the Kiel Institute and outlined his plans for the coming years: “I would like to thank the State of Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel University, and the Boards of the Kiel Institute for my appointment. I am excited about taking on my new role.”
He added: “My predecessor, Dennis Snower, did a superb job in leading the Kiel Institute to exceptional achievements in international research. My focus will be more on the national and European level. We will use a strategy process to refocus the profile of the Kiel Institute. On the one hand, I would like to contribute from my own areas of research in international trade; on the other, I aim to strengthen the core competences of the Institute—in business cycle research, for example. As a first step, we are now establishing two additional professorships in International Economics together with Kiel University. Our goal is to be the first point of contact for policymakers and business with regard to all questions around globalization.”
Dr. Oliver Grundei, Head of the Kiel Institute’s Board of Governors, believes that Gabriel Felbermayr is the ideal candidate to take the Institute forward. “We are delighted to have secured the services of Professor Felbermayr, who is a first-rate academic, an experienced advisor to politicians, and a dynamic leadership talent. His main area of research—international trade—will strengthen the Institute’s global orientation and help us succeed in the competition for attention and resources.”
As part of his Presidency of the Kiel Institute, Gabriel Felbermayr has also been appointed Professor of Economics at Kiel University (CAU).
About Gabriel Felbermayr:
Gabriel Felbermayr (42) was born in 1976 in Austria. He studied economics at the University of Linz and received his Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, for his work on economic growth and international trade. He then held the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Tübingen from 2005 to 2008. He also received his habilitation there in 2008, with a thesis on trade and unemployment. From 2008 to 2011, he was Professor of Economics (with an emphasis on international economics and policies) at the University of Hohenheim. In 2010, Felbermayr became Director of the ifo Center for International Economics at the ifo Institute in Munich. He combined this role from 2011 onward with a Professorship of Economics at the University of Munich (LMU). Among other positions, Felbermayr is a member of the Board of Academic Advisors to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and of the editorial boards of the European Economic Review and the Journal of the European Economic Association.
