Is it possible to maintain our industrial production without compromising climate targets? The ENERGY X roadmap is designed to answer this question. Developed with the participation of more than 180 European scientists as part of an EU project, it will be presented in Brussels on 26 September 2019.
Meeting the needs of a growing world population for products, mobility and energy while mitigating climate change - this will hardly be possible on the basis of fossil resources. The EU project ENERGY-X aims to develop new methods and technologies enabling renewable energy to replace oil and gas as the basis for industry. Accompanying the research work and scientific projects, the project members have analysed the status quo and identified areas in which there is a particular need for action. The publication "Research needs towards a sustainable production of fuels & chemicals" summarises the results and provides a scope for further activities.
The ENERGY-X report summarises the knowledge and experience of more than 180 European scientists. It examines the scientific challenges and research needs for 12 different areas in chemistry, energy and transport. "All European countries and relevant stakeholders have to be part of the solution.," says Jens Nørskov, ENERGY-X project coordinator. Bert Weckhuysen, ENERGY-X project partner of the University of Utrecht, emphasizes: "We have to make clear to European decision makers that support is needed to accelerate the defossilization process. Climate change is real and is happening now: we have to build on our potential to give impulse to industrial processes, the energy and the transportation sector to preserve the world for the next generation."
ENERGY-X is a Coordination and Support Action under the EU's HORIZON 2020 research programme. 13 partners from across Europe are working to develop a strategic roadmap for the efficient use of renewable energy for the production of chemical products.
