November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Numerous activities will take place around this date in order to draw attention to the metabolic disease and its consequences. The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) is involved in various activities. At World Diabetes Experience Day on November 16th at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the DZD will be present with the test for the German Diabetes Risk Score, an interactive quiz, up-to-date information from diabetes experts and much more. The DZD is also supporting phone campaigns and the dialogue campaign on type 1 diabetes.
"Diabetes? Many people think "Not me". But current statistics give cause for concern. In Germany, almost seven million people currently suffer from diabetes, and every 55 seconds someone falls ill with this widespread disease. At the DZD stand at the World Diabetes Experience Day in Berlin, adults can test their individual risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next five years by means of the DIfE – German Diabetes Risk Score® (DRS). Those who are interested can also find out how they can reduce their risk and receive tips from experts on exercise and healthy nutrition. Visitors can also inform themselves interactively about the disease and current findings of diabetes research.
DZD experts on the event stage
Under the motto "News from research: Can diabetes be avoided?", DZD experts will present current research results on the large event stage (12:45 pm - 1:20 pm). In an interview with moderator Sybille Seitz (ARD and rbb), DZD managing director Dr. Astrid Glaser will report on the metabolic disease, the diabetes risk test and the work of the DZD. Professor Anette Ziegler (Helmholtz Zentrum München and DZD) will present current information on type 1 diabetes, the most common metabolic disease in childhood and adolescence. She will explain how it can be determined whether a person has an increased risk of developing the autoimmune disease and what researchers are working on to delay or even prevent the onset of the disease in the future.
In addition to a genetic predisposition, an unhealthy lifestyle is among the risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Stefan Kabisch (German Institute of Human Nutrition and DZD) will explain how a healthy diet can prevent metabolic disease and which diet is beneficial for type 2 diabetes. Following the DZD event, he will also participate as an expert in the panel discussion on "Healthy nutrition for type 1 and type 2 diabetes".
But just why do we eat what we eat? What are the relationships between nutrition, brain function and metabolism? The psychologist and brain researcher Professor Soyoung Park (German Institute of Human Nutrition and DZD) will provide initial answers to these questions in her lecture.
Exercise and diabetes
Already in the morning (10:30 am -10:55 am), DZD scientist Professor Peter Schwarz (Paul Langerhans Institute Dresden) will give a "Running Lecture" on the event stage. He will talk about "Exercise in Diabetes" and present an exercise app. At the DZD stand, DZD experts will also inform visitors about their work and answer their questions.

Dialogue campaign "Let's talk about 1"
In conjunction with World Diabetes Day, further activities are planned involving the DZD. For example, the Institute of Diabetes Research of Helmholtz Zentrum München, a DZD partner, is launching the nationwide dialogue campaign "Let's talk about 1". The aim is to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and to inform the public about various aspects of the disease, early detection and approaches to prevention. In addition, several people with type 1 diabetes tell about their lives with the chronic metabolic disease on the website of the "A World Without 1" research initiative. Phone campaign for World Diabetes Day
In the phone campaign of the German Center for Health Education (BZgA) and diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid, diabetes experts will answer questions about the topic of diabetes. Information event for World Diabetes Day
The DZD partner German Diabetes Center in Dusseldorf is inviting the public to an information event under the motto "Diabetes: Family makes you strong" on November 13, 2019. For those who are interested, it is also possible to have a brief diabetes check-up including a test to determine if there are any diabetes related changes in the eye.
