Am Freitag, den 15. September, feiert die IFAC in Heidelberg ihr 50-jähriges Jubiläum mit einem vom VDI/GMA organisierten Kongress mit drei wissenschaftlichen Festvorträgen und einem abendlichen Bankett im Heidelberger Schloss. Der Fest-Kongress findet im Anschluss an das 4. IFAC-Symposium über Mechatronische Systeme vom 12. bis 14. September statt, das ebenfalls in Heidelberg stattfindet.
Die IFAC, die International Federation of Automatic Control, wurde im September 1956 während einer Tagung in der Universität Heidelberg initiiert und im September 1957 in Paris offiziell gegründet. Am alle drei Jahre stattfindenden Weltkongress der IFAC nahmen zuletzt 2005 in Prag über 2600 Teilnehmer teil.
In Deutschland hat sich die Automatisierungstechnik zu einer Schlüsselbranche entwickelt: Innerhalb der elektrotechnischen Erzeugnisse ist sie mit 206.000 Beschäftigten und einem Umsatz von 28 Milliarden Euro die größte Branche. Ihre Exportquote beträgt 77 Prozent, das Wachstum sechs bis acht Prozent jährlich.
Leiter der Jubiläumstagung ist Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Isermann vom Institut für Automatisierungstechnik (IAT) der TU Darmstadt, das ebenfalls auf fünf Jahrzehnte Geschichte zurückblicken kann: Mit der Berufung von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Winfried Oppelt 1957 auf einen Lehrstuhl für Regelungstechnik an der damaligen TH Darmstadt ist das IAT das älteste und traditionsreichste Institut für Automatisierungstechnik in Deutschland.
