The ageing of the population, therefore of kinships, allows to reframe the preva-lent discourse on the weakening of the family. If marriages and partnerships have become more unstable, obligations and exchanges through the "lineage" seem not to loose their relevance, on the contrary. Two phenomena contribute to this relevance, but also to its hidden tensions: a) the caring demands that derive both from aging itself and from women's increasing labour market participation; b) the growing instability of the labour market that affects particularly the young, there-fore their ability to form their own household. In both cases, intergenerational relationships and solidarity may be a resource and a constrain. The degree to which the balance is tipped in one or the other direction depends not only on indi-vidual family histories, but on the way intergenerational and gender obligations are inscribed in welfare arrangements and in cultural models.
