Ralf Dahrendorf wurde 1929 in Hamburg geboren. Nach dem Krieg studierte er an der Universität Hamburg Philosophie, Germanistik und klassische Philologie. Von 1958 bis 1960 war er in Hamburg als Professor an der Akademie für Gemeinwirtschaft (der späteren Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Politik) tätig. Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter liberaler Gesellschafts- und Staatstheorien. Professor Dahrendorf war Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie, Mitglied des Deutschen Bundestages, parlamentarischer Staatssekretär im Auswärtigen Amt, Mitglied der Europäischen Kommission, Direktor der London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) und Mitbegründer der Universität Konstanz.
1988 nahm Dahrendorf die britische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Für seine Verdienste wurde er von Königin Elisabeth II. 1993 zum Baron Dahrendorf of Clare Market in the City of Westminster ernannt.
Seit Januar 2005 ist er Inhaber einer Forschungsprofessur am Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung.
In den Sozialwissenschaften ist er als Vertreter der Konfliktsoziologie bekannt. Er führte mit dem Konzept des "Homo Sociologicus" die Rollentheorie in die deutsche Soziologie ein.
