Die optische Mikroskopie ist gegenwärtig die einzige Methode, um molekulare Prozesse in lebenden Zellen und Geweben dreidimensional und in Echtzeit zu beobachten. Sie spielt daher eine zentrale Rolle in den Lebenswissenschaften, insbesondere in der molekularen Medizin. Die enormen Fortschritte in der optischen Mikroskopie der letzten Jahre stützen sich auf die Entwicklung neuer Mikroskop-Technologien in Kombination mit leistungsstarken Laserlichtquellen und höchstempfindlichen Detektoren für Lichtquanten. Darüber hinaus sind neue Möglichkeiten der Fluoreszenzmarkierung durch organische Farbstoffe, Halbleiterquantenpunkte und fluoreszente Proteine ebenfalls essentiell. Am Institut für Biophysik wird diese Forschungsthematik in einem transdisziplinären Ansatz intensiv bearbeitet.
