Leonhard Euler war ohne Zweifel ein Begründer der modernen Theorie des Schiffes. Er hat viele grundsätzliche Fragen aufgeworfen, hat sich in allen Phasen seines beruflichen Lebensweges auch mit schiffstheoretischen Themen befasst und dabei der jungen, gerade entstehenden Wissenschaftsdisziplin ein eigenes Profil gegeben. Viele seiner Lösungsansätze sind bis heute von prägendem Einfluss auf die Struktur dieses Faches geblieben.
