Grünbergs Arbeiten über magnetische Materialien setzten in den 1990er-Jahren eine Revolution im Bereich der Magnetspeicher in Gang. So beruht die enorme Leistung heutiger Computer-Festplatten maßgeblich auf dem von Peter Grünberg und dem Franzosen Albert Fert entdeckten Phänomen des "Riesenmagnetowiderstands". Für diese Entdeckung wurden beide Forscher im Dezember 2007 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet.
