Der Begriff "Geldwäsche" stammt ursprünglich aus den USA und bezeichnete den Versuch der Mafia in den dreißiger Jahren, illegales Geld mithilfe von Waschsalons "reinzuwaschen". Bis Ende der achtziger Jahre war der Begriff "Geldwäsche" im deutschsprachigen Raum kaum bekannt. Mittlerweile hat er eine erstaunliche Karriere hinter sich, was auf die wachsenden illegalen Gewinne der organisierten Kriminalität zurückzuführen ist. Die Globalisierung hat Kriminalität internationalisiert und damit auch die illegalen Märkte vergrößert.
