Water for development: Prospects for integrated water resources management

Annual Conference of the North-South Centre of the ETH Zurich in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

Water is essential for life on earth and a vital resource for human development. Increasingly, water resources are under pressure from population growth, economic activity and improved standards of living, resulting in an intensified competition for water for the different human needs and for the environment. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is an internationally accepted approach to the sustainable development, allocation and monitoring of water use.

The conference will address the prospects for IWRM to contribute to an equitable and sustainable allocation of water in the development context. In particular, it will highlight the role and contribution of research for development in the water sector.
