Descartes, der Begründer des neuzeitlichen Theoriebegriffs, hob die Bedeutung der Vernunft gegenüber der Erfahrung hervor. Seither wird über das Verhältnis von Theorie und Praxis gerungen: Leibniz sah deren Synthese in der Anwendung, Kant erweiterte die Problematik um das Verhältnis zur Theorie der Moral. Die Verwissenschaftlichung der Technik lässt alle drei Anteile - Theorie, Praxis und Ethik - seit dem 19. Jahrhundert in ein Spannungsverhältnis treten, dessen Bedeutung mit der Globalisierung täglich wächst.
