Die Gesellschaft für Klassifikation ist ein international äußerst aktive wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft. Sie ist transdisziplinär und fachübergreifend ausgerichtet und beschäftigt sich mit Methoden der Klassifikation und Datenanalyse in Theorie und Anwendung. Damit stößt sie in hochaktuelle Grenzbereiche von Statistik und Informatik vor. Insbesondere stellt die Aufdeckung von Strukturen in extrem großen und komplex strukturierten Datenmengen und der effiziente Umgang mit solchen Datenbeständen viele Wissenschaftler und Anwender vor große Herausforderungen; als Stichworte seien Bioinformatik und Genomanalyse oder Finanz- und Versicherungsdaten genannt, Kundendaten in vielen modernen Unternehmen, e-Commerce und Daten aus dem Internet, Information Retrieval und Informationsspeicherung.
