Besonders intensiv beschäftigen sich die Greifswalder Landschaftsökologen mit Themen, die in Zentralasien angesiedelt sind. In einem aktuellen Projekt geht es um Schutz, Nutzung und Verjüngung der Pappelwälder im Becken der Taklimakan-Wüste in der westlichsten Provinz Chinas, Xinjiang. In diesem Wüstengebiet gibt es entlang der oft im Sandmeer versiegenden Flüsse Wälder aus nur einer Baumart, einer extrem widerstandsfähigen Pappel, die sich Wasser aus bis zu 12 m Tiefe holen und noch in 40 m Entfernung aus ihren Wurzeln junge Bäume regenerieren kann. Ein solcher Wald aus einer Art ist eine Chance für die ökologische Forschung. Er ist eine Herausforderung für den Naturschützer. Bevölkerungsdruck und Wasserknappheit bedrohen das empfindliche Ökosystem.
