Leopoldina Symposium "Evolution of Antiviral and Antibacterial Defense"

Infection is the outcome of a crosstalk between microbes and higher organisms with the possible but not necessary result of disease. During the last 20 millenia, changes in human behaviour have significantly improved transmission of infectious agents resulting in more intricate relationships. The survival until today of humans as well as of virtually all infectious agents (with the notable example of smallpox virus) best illustrates the balanced evolution between pathogen and host. Host defence mainly involves two types of mechanisms, the innate and the acquired immune response and both are closely intertwined. Microbial invaders are characterized by rapid mutation and other genetic alterations and selection of the fittest. Accordingly, evolution of antiviral and antibacterial defence is an ongoing process which can be best studied by multidisciplinary approaches including microbial genetics, immunology and host genetics. It is the aim of this symposium to bring together researchers from different disciplines in order to provide a comprehensive insight into this complex relationship.
