Shale Gas ist eine bislang nur in den USA ökonomisch geförderte unkonventionelle Gasressource, nämlich erdgashaltige Schieferformationen.
In den USA beträgt der Shale Gas-Anteil der nationalen Gasförderung bislang ca. 8%, dieser soll bis 2020 auf 20% steigen.
In Europa gibt es bereits erste Explorationsansätze (Schweden, Polen, Österreich).
Die Forschung sieht Europa mit grossen Förderpotenzialen, allerdings befinden sich die Europäer noch am Anfang der Entwicklung. Hier ist auch noch Grundlagenforschung vonnöten. Deshalb soll auf dem GASH-Kickoff Meeting in Zusammenarbeit von Forschung und Industrie die verschiedenen Aspekte der Bildung und möglicher Nutzung dieser Gase im Gestein diskutiert werden.
