International Summer School 2009: Infectious Disease Epidemiology

Modern Surveillance, Mathematical Modelling, International Dimensions

In 2009 the International Summer School Programme combines the well-established course on infectious disease epidemiology (IDE) with two new courses, one on Megacities (website: http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/gesundhw/ag2/summerschoolmc/ ) and one on Multilevel Modelling for Public Health and Health services Research (MLM) (website: http://iph-partnership.org ), to improve the knowledge about statistical and epidemiological methods for controlling the predominant health problems of the 21st century.
Among the determinants of both infectious and noninfectious diseases are population growth, mobility, urbanization, poverty, climate change and insufficient health care systems, which will deteriorate further with the financial crisis in many parts of the world. Both courses will teach specific statistical methods in order to detect, and adequately respond to global and
local health problems.
This course will provide a deep understanding of the special IDE concepts and methods. The participants will be enabled to manage an outbreak, to correctly
create and interpret surveillance data, and to perform simple mathematical modelling for the spread of IDEs as well as to use basic health economic evaluations.
In addition they will know how to apply the learned concepts and methods to actual global public health challenges (e.g. tuberculosis, dengue).

Teaching methods
The course contains introductory lectures, computer
classes, individual consultation and two assignments.
Teaching language is English.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
