Am 1. Oktober 1959 gründete eine Gruppe prominenter Physiker die "Vereinigung Deutscher Wissenschaftler" (VDW). Zu den Initiatoren zählen Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker und die Nobelpreisträger Max Born, Otto Hahn, Werner Heisenberg und Max von Laue. Zwei Jahre zuvor waren sie mit der "Göttinger Erklärung" an die Öffentlichkeit gegangen: Diese war Ausdruck eines neuen Verantwortungsbewusstseins der Wissenschaft angesichts des atomaren Vernichtungspotentials während des Kalten Kriegs. Anlässlich des 50. Jahrestages der VDW-Gründung laden der VDW und die Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft zu einer gemeinsamen Tagung, die sich mit der Verantwortung der Wissenschaft in der heutigen Zeit befassen wird. Im Fokus stehen neben der atomaren Rüstungskontrolle, die Zukunft der Energieversorgung sowie Klima- und Umweltschutz.
