Lange Zeit galt die Tiefsee als monotoner, wüstenähnlicher Lebensraum in dem aufgrund des hohen hydrostatischen Drucks und dem geringen Nahrungseintrag nur wenige Organismen überleben können. Forschungsergebnisse der letzten Jahrzehnte haben jedoch gezeigt, dass in der Tiefsee eine größere Artenvielfalt existiert als zuvor angenommen wurde.
