Introduction: Rolf Rosenbrock
Moderated by: Michael Wright
Participatory health research (PHR) has emerged as an important approach for addressing local health issues through improving the lives of those most affected by health inequalities. Based in the tradition of action research, PHR is characterized by partnerships between researchers and various stakeholders with the purpose of generating knowledge in order to take action for improving the health of the communities involved. The success of PHR in producing effective interventions has resulted in increased recognition worldwide. In spite of this success, several questions remain regarding the scientific contribution of PHR to health research in terms of theory generation and research methodology. In this lecture, Professor Springett will draw on her extensive international experience as a researcher and consultant to discuss the importance of PHR for health policy and research, addressing scientific, practical, and ethical issues.
Jane Springett is Professor of Health Promotion and Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University where she is the lead for the Health Promotion, Policy and Inequality Network within the Institute for Health Research. She is Visiting Professor at Kristianstad University in Sweden where she recently led the development of an interdisciplinary research unit based on participatory action research and evaluation methodologies. A member of the WHO Europe Working Group on the Evaluation of Health Promotion, she contributed to a rise in the use of participatory approaches to evaluation at both the community and policy levels. She has a worldwide reputation as an expert on participatory evaluation and is co-author with Margaret Ledwith, Emeritus Professor of Community Development and Social Justice at the University of Cumbria, of the book Participatory Practice: Community-based action for transformative change.

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
