Der Ozean beherbergt eine bisher unbekannte Vielfalt an Lebewesen und Ökosystemen. Bei ihrer Erforschung ist jedoch Eile geboten, denn das Artensterben und die Veränderung der Meeresumwelt schreiten mit erschreckender Geschwindigkeit voran. Professor Antje Boetius spricht im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe "Exkurs - Einblick in die Welt der Wissenschaft" über ihre Forschungsarbeiten in der Tiefsee und den Beitrag, den diese Arbeiten zur Lösung drängender Probleme auf der Erde leisten können. Professor Boetius ist am Max-Planck-Institut für Marine Mikrobiologie in Bremen und am Alfred-Wegener-Institut in Bremerhaven tätig und erhielt im Jahr 2009 den Gottfried Wilhelm-Leibniz-Preis.
