Die Analyse komplexer biologischer Prozesse auf molekularer Basis verlangt sowohl neue experimentelle als auch konzeptionelle Forschungsansätze. Der Fortschritt bei den quantitativen Untersuchungsmethoden ermöglicht heute eine genaue Aufgliederung in die verschiedenen regulierende Komponenten, die das Verhalten von Säugetierzellen steuern. Dadurch sind auch neue Methoden aus den Bereichen Informatik, Mathematik, Ingenieurswissenschaftlen und Physik notwendig, um die Informationen moderner Experimente zu integrieren und zu verarbeiten. Diese Verknüpfung dient auch dazu, neue theoretische Modelle zu entwickeln, die die Design-Prinzipien komplexer biologischer Systeme genau beschreiben und ihr Verhalten auf der patho-physiologischen Ebene vorhersagen.
