In Brennstoffzellen kann aus Wasserstoff (H2) direkt und mit hoher Ausbeute elektrische Energie gewonnen werden. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung für diese Zukunftstechnologie ist jedoch die wirtschaftliche und umweltfreundliche Produktion von Wasserstoff. An Stelle der heute zur H2-Produktion meist eingesetzten fossilen Brennstoffe könnte künftig auch Biomasse, z.B. Stroh oder Holz, als Ausgangsstoff genutzt werden. Doch bevor sie in Brennstoffzellen eingesetzt werden können, müssen die bei der Biomasse-Vergasung entstehenden wasserstoffreichen Gase aufwendig aufgearbeitet und gereinigt werden. Ziel des Verbundprojekts "ProBio" ist es, neue Prozessrouten zu finden und so zu optimieren, dass aus Biomasse möglichst effizient und umweltschonend elektrischer Strom gewonnen werden kann.
