Der von der Robert Bosch Stiftung 2009 ins Leben gerufene Preis zeichnet mit Hilfe einer Jury unter Vorsitz von Nobelpreisträger Professor Erwin Neher exzellente Kooperationsprojekte zwischen Forschungseinrichtungen und Schulen aus, um diese weiter voranzubringen und dazu aufzurufen, selbst solche Projekte ins Leben zu rufen. Neben dem Hauptpreis von 50 000 Euro, den die Staatssekretärin im Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Cornelia Quennet-Thielen, in Vertretung von Schirmherrin Bildungsministerin Annette Schavan verleiht, werden zwei weitere Projekte mit einem Preisgeld von jeweils 20 000 Euro prämiert.
