Seit 1998 wird der Joseph-Breitbach-Preis von der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz, gemeinsam mit der Stiftung Joseph Breitbach an deutschsprachige Autoren aller Literaturgattungen vergeben. Sie entsprechen damit dem Willen des Schriftstellers Joseph Breitbach, der, in Koblenz geboren, in Paris und München gelebt hat. Seit 2003 findet die Preisverleihung in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Koblenz in Breitbachs Geburtsort statt.
