Vor 500 Jahren besuchte Martin Luther Rom. Die Romreise soll aufgrund der aktuellen Forschungslage rekonstruiert und die mit ihr verbundenen Erinnerungsperspektiven behandelt werden. Im Mittelpunkt der Tagung steht die Frage, welches Bild die einschlägigen kulturgeschichtlichen Disziplinen derzeit von der Stadt Rom zeichnen, die seit der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts immer kosmopolitischer wurde. Dabei soll ein möglichst differenziertes Bild Roms in der vorreformatorischen Zeit vermittelt werden. Ein besonderer Stellenwert kommt theologie- und frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen zu, die für die Rezeption der damaligen Metropole bis heute von fachübergreifendem Interesse sind. Ferner geht es um die intellektuellen Milieus in der Stadt und um Rom als Zentrum von Kunst, Architektur und Musik.
