Führende Ionenkanal-Forscher wie Professorin Frances M. Ashcroft (Oxford) und Professor Thomas Jentsch (Berlin) werden unter anderem über die Rolle von KATP – sowie Chloridkanälen bei chronischen Krankheiten sprechen und Therapieansätze vorstellen. Das Satellitensymposium wird von der Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung unterstützt. Im Jahr 2007 ist Birgit Liss mit dem Alfried Krupp-Förderpreis für junge Hochschullehrer ausgezeichnet worden. Dabei handelt es sich um den höchst dotierten Preis für Nachwuchswissenschaftler: Über fünf Jahre werden ausgewählte Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaftler mit einer Million Euro gefördert. Die Ausrichtung eines internationalen Symposiums ist Teil des Preises.
