Yael Benyamini: What can we learn from what people say about their health?

Subjective perceptions of health, typically called self-rated health, have been found to correlate with many other measures of health status.

Changes in these perceptions coincide with changes in other health measures, suggesting that even though they are overall quite stable, they also capture the dynamic nature of health. Though this seems somewhat paradoxical, the most intriguing finding is that self-rated health predicts mortality and future morbidity: It has an independent contribution to the prediction of future health, even after controlling for a variety of other known predictors of mortality. This finding has inspired extensive research aimed at understanding the nature of self-ratings of health and the reasons for their validity. In this talk, I will review the literature on the nature of self-rated health and its predictive power, the existing explanations for this power and the state-of-the-art evidence for these explanations. Finally, I will discuss the limitations to the validity of self-rated health and the conclusions regarding it uses and misuses in research and practice in gerontology.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
