The piracy off the coast of Somalia is threatening international trade, the lives of seafarers and the entire maritime industry. As a reaction to the rising threat the international community deployed naval forces, rerouted vessels, and employed deterrent and security equipments. Nonetheless, effective maritime security has remained difficult.
This GIGA Forum offers new insight into the causes and consequences of piracy in Somalia and the danger posed by maritime piracy to international navigation in general. International responses to the problem of piracy but also possible solutions of how to tackle this challenge to maritime security will be addressed in the presentation.
