Building a new state from the scratch is a long-term process and it would be naïve to draw conclusions only a few months after the independence of South Sudan. Yet, this GIGA Forum sheds light on some emerging patterns: (re)formation of old/new armed groups, the exclusiveness of the political arena, but also continuing external dependencies on the United Nations mission and foreign aid organizations.
The challenges for government and society remain arduous: coping with continuous violence and mass displacements, new confrontations in the contested areas Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile, but also creating an inclusive political space and a transparent management of the oil sector.
