Viele von ihnen, die sich nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg dem Kommunismus zuwandten, suchten nach Alternativen außerhalb europäischer Denk- und Kunsttraditionen, unter ihnen Bertolt Brecht, Alfred Döblin, Friedrich Wolf oder Anna Seghers.
