Mit dem Preis sollen hervorragende Persönlichkeiten und Forschende auf dem Gebiet der Katalyse geehrt werden. Mit der Auszeichnung verbunden sind ein einwöchiger Gastaufenthalt an einem der beteiligten Berliner Institute und ein Festvortrag.
Als vierten Preisträger hat die Jury Prof. Roald Hoffmann vom Baker Laboratory der Cornell Universität, Ithaca, im US-Bundesstaat New York, USA, ausgewählt.
