Tim Blanning ist Professor für Neuere Europäische Geschichte an der Universität von Cambridge und damit einer der führendsten europäischen Kulturhistoriker. Seine bisherigen Veröffentlichungen beschäftigen sich mit der Politik- und Kulturgeschichte Europas im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Neben "Das Alte Europa 1660-1789. Kultur der Macht und Macht der Kultur" (Primus-Verlag, 2005) und "The Pursuit of Glory: Europe 1648-1815" verfasste er zuletzt "Triumph der Musik: Von Bach bis Bono", von der die FAZ schrieb: "Kein Konzertbesuch mehr ohne dieses Buch!".
