Zum Verständnis biblischer (und auch anderer) Texte gehört die Geschichte ihrer Interpretation und Wirkung, ihrer Rezeption dazu. Die Rede des Auferstandenen in der matthäischen Perikope vom Weltgericht ("Was ihr getan habt einem von diesen meinen geringsten Brüdern, das habt ihr mir angetan") ist ein fundamentaler Text christlicher Ethik und hat auch ungezählte Werke bildender Kunst beeinflusst. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Vortrags steht Johannes Chrysostomus, für den diese Verse die Basis seiner Sozialethik bilden.
