Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae are two Gram negative pathogens that commonly can be found in pre-school children. However, these two species also cause acute otitis media in children, and sinusitits, tracheitis or pneumonia in adults. The talk by Kristian Riesbeck will be on 1) the IgD-binding properties of Moraxella and its capacity to interact with the immune system using outer membrane vesicles; and 2) the novel Haemophilus protein E that has was recently discovered in the Riesbeck lab. Protein E is a multifunctional adhesin that interacts with epithelial cells as well as vitronectin, laminin ad plasminogen.
