The term "biomimetics" originates from the Greek words bios (meaning life) and mimetikos (meaning imitative) and describes the study of biological systems and materials for the purpose of using them as a model for modern technology. Even though biomimetics is a relatively young discipline, the idea of imitating nature to solve mankind's problems is not a new one. Leonardo da Vinci's design of flying machines based on physiological studies of birds in the 15th century is one of the earliest examples.
Since that time a giant leap has been made and, recently, many bio-inspired products and systems have been developed including self-cleaning surfaces inspired by the lotus leaf and reusable adhesive tapes inspired by gecko feet.
This year's VBC PhD symposium aims to provide a broad overview of the interdisciplinary field of biomimetics, ranging from bio-inspired materials and robots, through strategies in architecture and energy production, to biomimetic research in the area of information technology. Therefore we have invited 14 excellent speakers from the field of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Engineering.
We would like to invite you to the 2012 VBC PhD Symposium to learn more about trendsetting strategies and recent development in the field of biomimetics.
