Gewalt ist natürlich in der Kriminologie und anderen Spezialdisziplinen präsent, rangiert aber nicht als Begriff von ähnlich grundlegender Art wie "Gesellschaft", "Raum" etc. und wird also auch nicht mit entsprechendem Aufwand und der nötigen Abstraktionshöhe gedanklich traktiert. Fast immer redet man über Gewalt in instrumentellem Sinne. Es gibt Ziele und Mittel; Gewalt kann eines dieser Mittel sein. Vordringlich ist, wenn man so an die Sache herangeht, über diese Ziele zu reden. Hat man das getan, kann man sich fragen, warum sie mit Gewalt verfolgt worden sind. Nun gibt es kleine wie große gesellschaftliche Ereignisse – darunter Katastrophen bzw. Verbrechen säkularen Ausmaßes –, die auf diese Weise nicht verstanden werden können. Diese Einsicht muss Rückwirkungen auf die theoretische Konstruktion des Begriffes "Gewalt" haben. Im Vortrag geht es um die konstruktive Seite der Gewalt: Gewalt als brachiale soziale Gestaltung.
