Das moderne Entwicklungsunterfangen, wie es in der Antrittsrede des US-Präsidenten Harry Truman 1949 exemplarisch verdichtet wurde, war eng verbunden mit der Annahme eines transparenten globalen Raumes. Der Vortrag zeigt, dass die historische Forschung zur Entwicklungszusammenarbeit die Geschichte der Bevölkerungsstatistik, der Arealstatistik und der Wirtschaftsstatistik mit in den Blick zu nehmen hat. Diese Vermessungsprojekte waren die epistemische Basis der Entwicklungsprojekte und des Entwicklungsdiskurses. Im 20. Jahrhundert haben sich drei Regimes überschnitten: (1) die imperiale Statistik; (2) der methodische Nationalismus der Statistik; und (3) die Datenbanken der Weltinnenpolitik (global governance). Der Vortrag blickt exemplarisch auf das Feld der Makroökonomie und behandelt in erster Linie Afrika.
