Die Vermeidung von Kohlenstoffdioxid-Emissionen ist ein vordringliches Ziel der internationalen Umweltpolitik. Dabei wird CO2 als Abfall und Schadstoff wahrgenommen. Tatsächlich steckt in CO2 mit Kohlenstoff aber auch der Grundstoff für eine Vielzahl chemischer Produkte. Etliche Forschungsprojekte haben in den vergangenen Jahren entscheidende Durchbrüche bei Nutzungsmöglichkeiten von CO2 erzielt. Diese so genannten CCU-Technologien – Carbon Capture and Utilization (Abscheidung und Nutzung von Kohlenstoff) – schaffen somit eine alternative Perspektive auf Kohlendioxid. Das IASS-Projekt „CO2 als Wertstoff (CCU) – Potenziale & Herausforderungen für die Gesellschaft“ erforscht die Potenziale von CCU-Technologien interdisziplinär aus wirtschaftlicher und ökologischer Perspektive und untersucht kommunikative Aspekte.
