Das Fach Ostasiatische Kunstgeschichte wurde 1999 mit Mitteln der Gerda Henkel Stiftung und unter Mithilfe des damaligen Direktors am Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Prof. Dr. Willibald Veit, an der Freien Universität initiiert. 2003 wurde die eingerichtete Stiftungsprofessur mit Prof. Dr. Jeong-hee Lee-Kalisch besetzt. Damit verbunden sind ein Bachelor- und Masterstudiengang sowie die Möglichkeit zur Promotion. Honorarprofessuren und eine Gerda-Henkel-Gastprofessur verstärken das Lehrangebot und das internationale Netzwerk des Instituts: Regelmäßige Gastvorträge und Lehraufträge international renommierter Wissenschaftler ermöglichen Studierenden zusätzliche Einblicke in die vielfältigen Wissenschafts- oder Tätigkeitsbereiche des Faches. Die enge Kooperation mit dem Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, unterstützt ein praxisnahes Studium.
Die Konferenz wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum für Asiatische Kunst und mit freundlicher Unterstützung der Gerda Henkel Stiftung und des Japanischen Kulturinstituts in Köln (The Japan Foundation) veranstaltet.
