Am 20. Juni 2013 veranstaltet die Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker und das Institut für Chemie ein wissenschaftshistorisches Kolloquium.
Frau Prof. Dr. Renate Tobies (Jena) wird zum Thema: Innovative Physikochemikerin in der Industrieforschung bei Osram oder "Berechnen statt Stöpseln"in der Materialforschung sprechen.
Der Vortrag präsentiert Ergebnisse, die im Rahmen eines DFG-Projekts erarbeitet wurden. Im Zentrum steht die in Physikalischer Chemie promovierte Iris Runge (1888-1966), Tochter des Mathematik-Professors Carl Runge (Runge-Kutta-Verfahren), die im Rahmen ihrer Dissertation bei Gustav Tammann (Göttingen 1922) die Diffusion von Kohlenstoff in Eisen behandelte und erstmals den Diffusionskoeffizienten für feste Zweistoffsysteme mathematisch bestimmte. Diese Arbeitsweise, die chemisch-physikalische, metallographische und mathematische Methoden verknüpfte, setzte Iris Runge bei Osram unter dem Forschungsdirektor Dr. Richard Jacoby (1877-1941), anorganischer Chemiker, fort. Dabei kreierte sie im Unternehmen einen neuen Denkstil: „Berechnen statt Stöpseln“. Im Vortrag werden vor allem ihre Arbeiten zur Materialforschung, die heute noch als wertvoll betrachtet werden, näher beleuchtet und in den Forschungsstand eingeordnet.
