Unter der Überschrift „Chinesisches“ hat Goethe 1827 Nachdichtungen chinesischer Texte veröffentlicht – einen kleinen Zyklus von großem Gewicht.Denn diese Porträtgalerie von vier „zärtlichen chinesischen Fräulein“,deren Texte Goethe eigenständig weiterdichtet, nimmt in seiner Begegnung mit China eine Schlüsselstellung ein. Die ungleich berühmteren „Chinesischdeutschen Jahres- und Tageszeiten“ folgen diesem Experiment nicht nur, sondern gehen aus ihm hervor.
