Goethes Begriff der „Weltliteratur“ ist wesentlich inspiriert von der Begegnung mit der chinesischen Literatur und gleichermaßen aus dem Austausch mit einigen Vertretern der europäischen Romantik entstanden. Mit ihnen setzt sich der späte Goethe nicht zuletzt in seiner Zeitschrift „Über Kunst und Altertum“ auseinander, von der Beschäftigung mit ihnen ist auch der 3. Akt in „Faust II” (Helena-Akt) inspiriert, in dem sich „der leidenschaftliche Zwiespalt zwischen Klassikern und Romantikern endlich versöhnt“.
