Thomas Bauer: Gab es ein islamisches Mittelalter?

Der Begriff „islamisches Mittelalter“ ist nicht nur im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch verwurzelt, sondern wird auch von Historikern und Islamwissenschaftlern – zumeist unreflektiert – verwendet. Aber lässt sich der Mittelalterbegriff überhaupt universell anwenden, und passt er auf die Gesellschaften des Nahen Ostens, deren materielle und kulturelle Entwicklung seit der Spätantike ganz anders verlief als im Westen? Wann also begann das Mittelalter im Islam, und, noch brisanter, wann hörte es auf?
