100 Jahre Mathematik an der Goethe-Universität

Als die Goethe-Universität im Jahr 1914 gegründet wurde, war der Mathematiker Arthur Schoenflies Gründungsdekan der naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät. Das Fach war somit von Anfang an in dieser Fakultät vertreten. In einer Festveranstaltung gedenkt das Institut für Mathematik seiner historischen Wurzeln und gibt Ausblicke auf aktuelle Perspektiven des Fachgebiets. Hauptredner der Fieldsmedaillist Cédric Villani.

Cédric Villani (Université de Lyon and Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris) ist einer der weltweit prominentesten Mathematiker, welcher insbesondere durch seine faszinierenden Vorträge und sein autobiografisches Buch "Das lebendige Theorem" auch jenseits der universitären Fachwelt einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad erlangt hat. Villani wurde im Jahre 2010 für seine Arbeiten zur nichtlinearen Landau-Dämpfung und zur Boltzmann-Gleichung mit der Fields-Medaille die höchste mathematische Auszeichnung weltweit verliehen.

In seinem Vortrag "Of Gases, Prices, Triangles and Men" wird Villani aktuelle mathematische Entdeckungen und ihre Bedeutung für die Physik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften darstellen. In einem weiteren Vortrag wird Moritz Epple, Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe Wissenschaftsgeschichte an der Goethe-Universität, einen Einblick in die Anfangszeit der Universitätsmathematik in Frankfurt unter Arthur Schoenflies geben.
