Both HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, belong to the biggest killers and account for millions of deaths year by year. In recent years, coinfection with both pathogens not only occurs in Subsaharan Africa, but also at tremendously increasing speed in Eastern Europe and Central Asia where the problem of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis already makes an efficient tuberculosis control virtually impossible. Although the development of new strategies, new diagnostic tools and new drugs to fight tuberculosis is currently speeding up, HIV-TB comorbidity together with multidrug-resistance are two challenges that require an even faster counter-action. The past years saw increased efforts in research in diagnostics, therapy and prevention, also thanks to an increased engagement of non-governmental organizations and a fruitful collaboration with private companies. The eighth scientific symposium on World Tuberculosis Day will review the current epidemiological situation and present the newest insights in how to fight HIV-TB comorbidity in high- and low-burden settings.
